The World Conference Center Bonn has today been awarded the title Partner of Sustainable Bonn. With the project Sustainable Bonn that was initiated by the City of Bonn with support by the Federal Ministry for Economic Development shall Bonn be a conference location ensuring sustainability. Sustainability shall not only be the topic of many events but also respected when preparing and conducting the conferences and meetings.

In the course of this project, employees of the World Conference Center Bonn took part in four workshops, in which they were trained to respect aspects of sustainability and their transmission into practice. Main topics at issue were energy, water, waste, mobility management, employee motivation and procurement in order to safeguard sustainability. After two investigations at the site the consumption data of the World Conference Center Bonn were registered and analyzed. In cooperation with the consulting firm Arqum and the energy agency NRW a sustainability program was developed for the World Conference Center Bonn.

Matthias Schultze, Vice President of SMI HYUNDAI Management GmbH, is delighted about the award: „The topic sustainability is of growing importance. We take on this development in a positive way and we implement it – as well as topics in our congresses and by conducting our events. Through energy-saving measures we may lower our costs and protect the environment. And by participating in the project Sustainable Bonn we create a singular position“.

SMI HYUNDAI, the operator of the World Conference Center Bonn, endeavours to initiate events in the competence section „sustainability“ and to create networks. SMI HYUNDAI also implements the topic in the practical operation of the Congress Center. The aim is to conduct events in the World Conference Center Bonn in a more ecological and future-orientated way. When planning the extension building the ecological and economic aspects are particularly being respected, whereby a sustainable use of energy and renewable resources are especially important.

In 2007 13 hotel and Congress operators participated in Sustainable Bonn, to which also the two catering companies belong with whom the World Conference Center Bonn cooperates.

This year Sustainable Bonn is an official project in the world decade „Education for sustainable development “. The City of Bonn was appointed this week by the national comity of the UN decade to become „City of the world decade for sustainable education”. Bonn is the fourth city in Germany that receives this award. Hereby the numerous local activities are being recognized that contribute to the world-wide endeavour of „Education for sustainable development“.
